How to Take Product Photos with Your Phone
A step-by-step guide to taking professional product photos for e-commerce using only your smartphone. No studio, no expensive equipment — just your phone and good technique.
Clean Your Product
Before photographing, clean your product thoroughly. Remove dust, fingerprints, stickers, and any packaging debris. For glossy products, use a microfiber cloth. For fabric items, remove lint and smooth wrinkles. A clean product photographs dramatically better than a dusty one — camera sensors pick up imperfections that the naked eye misses.
Find Good Lighting
Lighting is the single most important factor in product photography. Use natural daylight whenever possible — place your product near a large window with indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, which creates harsh shadows and blown-out highlights. Overcast days provide the most even, diffused lighting.
If shooting indoors without good window light, use two or three desk lamps pointed at the product from different angles. Diffuse the light through a white sheet or paper to soften shadows. The goal is even, shadow-free illumination.
Set Up Your Background
For e-commerce, a clean background is essential. For white background shots (Amazon, Walmart), place your product on a white poster board or large sheet of paper curved from a wall. This creates a seamless background without visible edges.
Alternatively, if you plan to use AI tools like Lumepixa, the background does not matter — AI removes and replaces it automatically. In this case, just use any clean, contrasting surface so the product edges are clearly visible.
Position Your Phone
Stabilize your phone using a tripod, a stack of books, or lean it against something sturdy. Camera shake causes blur, especially in lower light. If you do not have a tripod, rest your elbows on a table while shooting.
Shoot at the product's eye level — not from above looking down (unless that is the intended angle). Position the product in the center of the frame, filling 70-85% of the image area. Leave some margin around the edges.
Use Your Phone Camera Settings
Turn off the flash — it creates harsh, unflattering light and reflections. Lock the focus by tapping on the product on your screen. Adjust exposure by sliding up or down after tapping (slightly brighter is usually better for product photos).
Use the main camera lens (1x), not the ultra-wide or zoom. The main lens has the best quality on most phones. If your phone has a "Pro" or "Manual" mode, use it to set a lower ISO (for less noise) and let the camera choose the shutter speed.
Take Multiple Angles
For each product, capture at least 5-7 angles: front, back, both sides, top, 45-degree angle, and a detail close-up. Even if you only need one final image, having multiple options lets you choose the best shot.
For e-commerce, the most important angle is the front-facing 3/4 view — slightly angled so the product has depth and dimension. This is more visually appealing than a flat, straight-on shot.
Process with AI (Optional but Recommended)
After photographing, AI tools can transform your phone photos into professional, store-ready images. Lumepixa, for example, takes your smartphone photo and runs it through a 4-step AI pipeline:
1. Product detection — AI identifies and crops your product 2. Background removal — cleanly removes the original background 3. Scene generation — places the product on white or in a lifestyle scene 4. 4K upscaling — enhances resolution and sharpness
The result is a professional product photo that meets platform requirements, generated in about 2 minutes from a simple phone photo.
Pro Tips
Consistency is key
Use the same lighting, angle, and distance for every product to create a cohesive catalog that looks professional.
Avoid zoom
Digital zoom reduces quality. Move closer to the product instead of zooming in. Crop later if needed.
Check marketplace requirements
Amazon requires white backgrounds and 2000x2000px. Etsy favors lifestyle scenes. Check your platform's requirements before shooting.
Shoot more than you need
Take 10-20 photos per product and select the best ones. Storage is free — time re-shooting is not.
Clean your lens
Phone lenses collect fingerprint oils and dust throughout the day. Wipe with a soft cloth before every session.
Use a contrasting surface
If using AI background removal, place light products on dark surfaces and dark products on light surfaces for clean detection.
